Known as the Jewel of the Orient, the lovely Empress of the Jade Empire is a breath of fresh after a dynasty tradition.
Like all heirs to the throne, Meilin grew up in the lap of luxury. Although she was provided with everything and anything she ever wanted, she never asked for mutch. In all realty, all she ever would ask for was to play with the commoner children. Her father, Lu-Xen Ling, questioned his daughter's love for common folk, but never denied his precious daughter her only desire.
As time passed, and life went on, Lu-Xen started to become ill. The Epire's best doctors discovered that the Emperor developed a type of in operable cancer, one that was in fairly advanced stages. The Emperor only had three months to live. The news came as a shock to everyone, the Emperor took his fate in high sprits, beliving that, although young, Meilin's hands were as capeable as anyone else's.
So it came to pass that the Emperor passed away. The country morned his passing, but life had to move foward.
On the day of her inauguration, Meilin was nowhere to be seen. The royal guards franticly searched the Forbidden City's grounds for her, but to no avail. It seemed everything was going terribly wrong. Then the Captian of the Royal Guards found one of Meilin's friends franticly searching for help. It seemed as though she had climbed to one of the Palace's rooftops (a place she would often go as a child to be alone), and had gotten stuck.
It took several hours, and dozens of guards to get her down; but the worse part was that word had somehow got out of this embarassing little escapade.
When it came time for her inaugural speech, the entire city of Xu-Bing was abuzz with chatter of how the Empress would handle the events. As the new Empress stood up to the microphone to speak, the entire city came to watch, or to be more precise, to heckle and laugh at her. It was going to be difficult to take a Empress who got herself stuck on a roof seriously. But then the Empress spoke:
"My good people, I would like to start things off by saying that if you ever find a cat caught in a tree, please rescue it, because I can tell you from experence that it is not fun to be up that high. As for buisness, I plan to put a lot of funding into placing ladders on top of everyone's rooves, so this little incedent will never happen again."
The commoners were shocked to find the Empress making light of her own shortcummings. But once the shock wore off, every one that heard the speech laughed. The Empress continued her speech, cracking jokes and making puns every chance she got, and in the end, the Citizens of the Jade Empire developed a newfound respect for the Empress who didn't take herself seriously. In the end, that moment went down as the funniest inaugural speech in the history of the Jade Empire.
Currently, the Empress continues to rule, and the Jade Empire is know as the country of good-humor. All it's residents, even the most down on their luck, enjoy a happy and lighthearted life, and the Empress herslef continues to commune with the commoners and enjoy the company of thoes who are always in need of a good laugh.
To this day, every house is equipted with a ladder on the roof, a light hearted homage to the Empress.
